After Applying to PPSC: Roll Numbers, Tests, Interviews
What happens after you submit a PPSC application - roll number slips, test day rules, negative marking, interview shortlisting, the documents to bring and the most common reasons applications are rejected.

Submitting the application is the easy part. After the closing date, PPSC runs every candidate through a fixed sequence: written test, then for some posts typing or psychological assessment, then interview, then recommendation. Knowing how each stage works - and what gets people rejected along the way - saves a lot of heartbreak.
All of the rules below come from PPSC's Important Instructions to Candidates (dated 08-10-2026) and its FAQ page.

How you'll hear about your test
PPSC doesn't post you anything. All communication happens by SMS, email and the website, which is why you must keep the mobile number and email in your application working. The usual sequence before a written test is:
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| At least 7 days before | A tentative test schedule is posted on ppsc.gop.pk |
| Around 5 days before | SMS and email with the date, time and venue, asking you to download your roll number slip |
| 3 days before | Reminder SMS and email, plus a flash message on the website |
| 3 days before, if you've heard nothing | Confirm your status on the website or call the UAN, 042-111-988-722 |
Admission letters (roll number slips) are uploaded for everyone at once - no one gets theirs individually. Once your test is scheduled, open the admission letter link on the PPSC website, enter your CNIC and select your post, then print it. If you have a genuine reason to change your test centre, you must request it with proof before roll numbers are allocated.
You're admitted provisionally
PPSC lets candidates sit the test without checking their documents, at their own risk. Clearing the test doesn't mean you're eligible. Your documents are checked at the interview, and if you don't meet the rules there, your candidature is rejected.
Test day rules
- Bring your original, valid CNIC. If it isn't available, the venue in-charge may let you in provisionally with an original CNIC that expired no more than six months before the test, an original valid passport, or an original computerised domicile showing your photo. You'll sign an undertaking to produce your valid CNIC at the interview.
- Don't bring a mobile phone or any electronic gadget, even switched off. PPSC can lodge an FIR against a candidate found with one, as well as taking action under its own rules. Books, purses and arms are also banned.
- Bring your own pointer or ballpoint, in blue or black ink only.
- Write your paper code on the MCQ answer sheet and fill in the matching bubble. If you don't, your sheet won't be marked and your candidature will be cancelled.
- If you think a question or answer is wrong, report it in writing during the test or later the same day. Objections after that aren't entertained.
How the test is marked
Most posts use a one-paper MCQ test. In Advertisement No. 11/2026, for example, each test is 100 marks in 90 minutes, and the syllabus split is printed against every post - some are 100% subject-related, while others combine general ability (GK, Pakistan Studies, current affairs, Islamic Studies, English, Urdu, maths, everyday science) with computer or subject questions. 0.25 marks are deducted for every wrong answer, and you need 40% to qualify.
For multi-paper written examinations, you need 40% in each paper and 50% in aggregate. Competitive examinations also have a psychological assessment, and you can't appear in the final interview if you miss it.
Results take time. PPSC says MCQ results usually take around 10 days, and subjective papers around 30 days, but it varies with the number of candidates. Your Detailed Marks Certificate (DMC) stays online for only 30 days, and you'll need your application number and token number to download it. PPSC does not publish answer keys. If you want your answer sheet rechecked, the FAQ describes a written application to the Secretary along with a rechecking fee paid online.
Shortlisting for interview
- Five candidates are normally called for interview per post, in order of test marks. The Chairman can raise this case by case.
- If several candidates tie on the cut-off mark, all of them are called, even if that goes beyond the ratio.
- For technical or professional posts where experience is involved, documents may be called from 15 candidates per post for scrutiny, but interviews still stay at five per post.
- Where there's a shorthand, typing or proficiency test, 20 candidates per post are called after the written test, and five per post go on to interview. These skill tests are held only in Lahore.
The interview
A tentative interview schedule goes up on the website at least 7 days in advance, and you'll get an SMS and email at least 6 days before, telling you to download your interview call-up letter. You need at least 50% in the interview to qualify.
Bring these to the interview:
- Your original CNIC and the interview call-up letter.
- Original degrees and certificates, with marks or a percentage certificate for each degree - CGPA alone isn't accepted.
- Your domicile certificate.
- Experience certificates with appointment letters, and proof of the employer's registration for private-sector experience.
- Your Departmental Permission Certificate, medical certificate, disability certificate or professional registration - if your post requires them.
- Two sets of photocopies of your documents.
If a document is missing, you may be interviewed provisionally after signing an undertaking. PPSC's FAQ allows up to 10 working days to make up deficient documents, and a missing CNIC must be produced within 7 working days. Don't expect extra marks for a higher degree or a distinction - PPSC doesn't award any, and since a July 2024 notification it no longer gives additional marks to the children of deceased or incapacitated civil servants.
Why applications get rejected
PPSC's FAQ lists the usual grounds for rejection. Almost all of them come down to the closing date and to paperwork:
| Ground for rejection | How to avoid it |
|---|---|
| Fee not paid by the closing date | Pay against your PSID and finish submitting well before the last day |
| Under-age or over-age | Calculate your age on the right date - even one day out makes you ineligible |
| No proof of age | Keep your Matric certificate, or an accepted alternative, ready |
| Required domicile not held | Domicile issued (or applied for, with proof) by the closing date, from the district you entered |
| No proof of qualification, or qualification not relevant | Result declared by the closing date; get an equivalence certificate if needed |
| Experience short, unproven or not countable | Count only experience after your qualification, with appointment letters and registration proof |
| Departmental permission refused | Civil servants should apply for their NOC early |
If you're rejected at the interview, you're handed a rejection letter in person and can ask the presiding member for a hearing. You can then make a representation to the commission within 7 working days, with documentary proof. There is no fee for this.
False information costs more than one post
Providing false information, hiding material facts, submitting forged documents, attempting to influence PPSC staff or using unfair means can get you disqualified and debarred from future PPSC tests and interviews, and the commission can begin criminal proceedings. Anyone offering to "get you selected" is lying - PPSC asks candidates to report such approaches.
Chances, merit lists and appointment
PPSC limits how many times you can fail the same post. The October 2026 Important Instructions allow five chances for posts filled by written test and interview, and three for competitive examinations, including the CCE. The FAQ page still mentions three, so check the current instructions if this affects you. A chance isn't counted for a one-paper test plus interview if you scored at least 40% in the test and 50% in the interview. After the interview, PPSC sends its recommendations to the department, which issues the appointment. The merit list stays valid for twelve months, so a candidate further down can be offered a substitute place if a recommended candidate doesn't join.
Use the waiting time well
The time between your application and your roll number slip is your preparation window. Look up the topics for your post on our syllabus pages at /syllabus, and build speed and accuracy on real PPSC past papers at /ppsc. With 0.25 marks lost on each wrong answer, practising under test conditions is what moves you into the top five per post.
